The present introduction to information management at German universities
examines the general background and development goals as well as
the opportunities and risks facing models and projects operating in this
field. It presents the results of a two-to-three-year practical test phase. The
main initiators of this process are the Deutsche Initiative für Netzwerkinformation
(DINI – German Initiative for Network Information) at the university
level, and the promotion programmes of the Bundesministerium für
Bildung und Wissenschaft (BMBF – Federal Ministry of Education and
Science) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research
Foundation). In general, it can be said that the problems and challenges
posed by information management and service integration, which
were introduced into Anglo-Saxon universities during the mid-1980s under
the keyword “convergence”, are now a key issue at German universities
and are being tackled with ever-greater energy 1
