complete, but key elements have been defined and anchored in real life.<br />

These are some of the steps:<br />

Already by the end of the 90s the universities of Duisburg and Essen<br />

understood the crucial <strong>im</strong>portance and far-reaching potentials of new digital<br />

media and technologies. This was manifested, for example, in:<br />

– Multi-Media Plans as blue-prints for the extension of new technologies<br />

and media in the universities were continuously updated<br />

– the central service-units, computing centre, library and media centre<br />

cooperated closely and developed joint projects, such as the mult<strong>im</strong>edia<br />

teaching and learning server in Essen (miless) or the Competence<br />

Centre Digital Media in Duisburg<br />

– the cooperation of these units with the chairs committed to innovation.<br />

This resulted in joint projects such as E-Campus (a model for a<br />

Notebook-University) in Duisburg, the E-Competence-Teams supporting<br />

and training teaching staff in Duisburg und Essen and E-<br />

University, fostering innovative e-learning in faculty and the development<br />

of a study portal<br />

– Management information systems based on a data warehouse and<br />

accessible online.<br />

4.1. Reorganisation of the ICM sector<br />

The foundation of the University Duisburg-Essen involved the necessity<br />

but also the chance for a through re-organisation, including the sector Information,<br />

Communication and Media. Though other universities are also<br />

re-arranging their service units, particularly the computing and the media<br />

centres, in order to meet new requirements resulting from the increasing<br />

<strong>im</strong>portance of digital media/technologies and the need for their integration<br />

as well as the greater role of E-Learning, E-Management etc. on the one<br />

hand and growing (global) competition on the other, there is a particular<br />

acuteness to these processes in Duisburg-Essen on account of the fusion.<br />

Digital technologies and media were rightly considered as <strong>im</strong>portant vehicles<br />

to solve a number of organisational problems of the two-campusuniversity.<br />
