of their location. The aim is to achieve this mobility on the basis of
current security standards.
– Over the next few years, the administration‟s entire IT infrastructure
is to be updated and modified so that it will function reliably with
limited resources. The most critical cost factors are – apart from
those of the hardware for PCs and server technology – the costs of
licences for PC software and those of maintaining the database
operating systems. The aim is to lower the hardware costs by consolidating
the servers and to at least limit software costs by continuing
to use open-source products.
– The goal is to establish a secure uniform identity infrastructure
throughout the university and thereby make it easier for staff, guests
and students to use IT services and applications at the HU. A uniform
central user administration is to be established that will assign
each user a central account. This account will give users access to the
IT services and applications offered by the HU.
– Security against failure and the availability of basic IT services and
IT systems will be considerably improved with the aid of redundant
technologies. Should one of the basic IT services or IT systems fail,
an alternative system will take over its functions within a few hours.
This applies, in particular, to those basic IT services and IT systems
(such as the mail system, the database server, and access to the basic
data stock) whose failure would seriously impair or interrupt the administration‟s
work.
– New integration concepts need to be developed for the data stocks
administrated with the aid of HIS software. The Enterprise Application
Integration (EAI) strategy is to be implemented in close cooperation
with the HIS GmbH company in Hanover. Unlike other integration
technologies such as function- or data-related integration,
EAI does not alter the individual IT systems, but links the functional
interfaces by means of so-called adaptors. EAI can, for example,
provide the basis for personalised portals and service-oriented architectures
(SOA).
IT applications support studies and teaching in many different ways.
What has been lacking so far, however, is a co-ordinated and comprehensive
IT concept. The present efforts aim to overcoming this deficiency.
