Grids
In Göttingen, the BMBF fosters the following grid projects:
– Instant-grid is a toolkit that demonstrates grid technology and its use
for certain demo applications. It enables the fast development of innate
grid applications. Thus, it establishes and broadens the use of escience
in research processes for science and economy.
– MediGrid develops a community grid for healthcare and life science
and establishes grids as a platform for highly collaborative e-science
structures within biomedical network research. A special challenge is
the warranty of data protection regulations. The MediGrid consortium
welcomes new communities that are to be introduced to grid
computing (for instance the humanities).
– TextGrid is a modular platform for distributed and cooperative scientific
text data processing. It provides basic functions like tools for
scientific editing and standardized gateways for publication software.
The following grid projects are planned:
– Together with local and supra-regional partners, grid-computing and
data-grid is to establish grid technology with respect to classic HPCclusters.
BMBF-D-Grid special investments enable a long-term storage of community
data with ensured storage capacity in data centers.
Long-term archiving
Service providers offer long-term archiving of relevant scientific or cultural
data that cannot be reproduced. This includes the physical maintenance
of stored data (bit-stream preservation). Information is saved redundantly
in geographically separated locations. The holder remains responsible
for ensuring the long-term interpretability of all data.
In this regard, the BMBF-funded project „Cooperative setup of a longterm
archive of digital information‟ (KOPAL) is especially important. It is
conducted in cooperation with the German library (Deutschen Bibliothek),
the Lower Saxony State and University Library (Niedersächsische Staats-
und Universitätsbibliothek) and IBM. KOPAL develops concepts for
