Promotion of Excellence
The University promotes scholarly excellence with its various master‟s
and Ph.D. programs. These programs are directed at highly qualified applicants
from all over the world. Four of the humanities and science based
Ph.D. programs are combined in the International Max Planck Research
Schools. The German Research Foundation sponsors 14 research training
groups, 19 junior research groups, numerous post-doctoral scholarships and
junior professors. All these form the interface between research oriented
courses of study and academia.
Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen
(SUB)
The Goettinger University Library was founded in 1734 and is one of
the five largest libraries in Germany. Currently, the library contains 4.5
million books, 265000 maps, 16000 periodicals, 13000 hand written documents,
3100 incunables, 350 inheritances from researchers, 150 CD-Rom
databases and 1.3 million microfiches. Additionally, the University offers
143 independent departmental libraries in its institutes.
University Foundation
Since January 1st, 2003, the Georg-August University of Göttingen is
sponsored by a public endowment. This marks a new phase of autonomy
and individual responsibility. In order to fulfill the legal requirements for
this phase, the old Higher Education Act of the State of Lower Saxony that
parliament ratified on June 24th, 2002 had to be revised. After four years,
the decision to use the endowment as sponsor of the University proved to
be right. This time was characterized by drastic cuts in the budget. The
cooperation between a competent foundation board, the right of appeal,
larger scope for design in human resource management, property, and
building construction management, and a larger window of opportunity
with the budget are noticable advantages in times of funding cuts.
School of Medicine
The School of Medicine includes the University hospital with approximately
1500 beds and numerous theoretical institutes. These are associated
