5. Development projects in the context of DFG support
The nine individual projects proposed by Augsburg University belong to
the focal areas ‚efficient IT basis‟, ‚service-oriented administration‟ and
‚research information‟.
Before we turn to a detailed account of those projects that will be carried
out by the university library and the computer center, a few words
about the other projects may be appropriate. ‚Service-oriented administration‟
means that individual chairs and the central administration cooperate
in developing integrated solutions for everyday administrative work routines.
Part of this is a seamless flow of data between the administration and
office workstations of the academic staff and a gateway for administrative
information. ‚Research information‟ includes, apart from the university
library‟s electronic publishing project, the fields of ‚media technology‟ and
‚education technology‟, i.e., it is concerned with establishing services relating
to new media and e-learning. The acitivities of individual chairs already
existing in this area will be integrated; they will be accompanied by qualification
measures and will be developed into a university-wide offer. Students
shall be tied to the university by means of attractive and at the same
time pedagogically sound teaching methods.
5.1. Efficient IT basis
The projects making up the section ‚efficient IT basis‟ are not only concerned
with technological issues; they rather aim at combining technology,
organisation and competence (the users‟ competence as well) into integrated
work structures, at significantly enhancing the quality and reliability
of information and communication services and at providing ideal surroundings
for the work of all university staff members.
For the time being, this means consolidation and optimisation of work
processes, so that in due time university-wide ‚integrated support structures‟
for workstations can be added.
Consolidation of basic services
For this project, no DFG support will be used. Important services such
as e-mail, WWW, DNS and DHCP have been firmly implemented by now,
but there is still a need for tools that support the concepts of centralised
