– DP assistant (now called ‚DP attendant’): Every DP representative
receives support from a DP assistant; he is in charge of the organisation
and coordination of all practical duties within the faculty.
– senate committee for information processing (IP committee): This
committee supervises the system supplying DP services. Its set-up is
typical of the structure of similar academic bodies.
With its limited resources, the computer center has consistently been
concentrating on extending the service infrastructure and has in that way
acquired a strong position within the university. The senate committee for
information processing, on the other hand, could not establish itself as an
authority dealing comprehensively with information and communication
issues and operating beyond the needs of individual faculties. Due to the
lack of such a comprehensive governance, the levels of supply with information
technology services vary significantly in decentralised areas, which
entails a high amount of service support and advisory duties.
4. The new organisational structure of the IT service center
It is the DFG sponsored initiative that, among other things, has given rise to
a comprehensive discussion concerning the necessity of organisational
changes in the information and communication services of universities.
As to Augsburg University, the main focus is on the achievement of the
following targets:
– governing committee: It is imperative to create a governing committee
for information and communication issues that is embedded in
the university management and that develops, enforces and continues
strategies to ensure that all parts of the university are consistently
and comprehensively supplied with information and communication
services.
– customer orientation: In future, information and communication services
must take their orientation and their guideline for further development
not from individual faculties and departments, but from
customer needs.
