courses from the German partner-universities is being considered. In the<br />

technical field, the further extension of the university service-portal and,<br />

thereby, the creation and integration of further online-services for students<br />

remains in the foreground. The kiz will care for the continuous renewing<br />

and updating of the hardware-systems and of the network as <strong>im</strong>portant<br />

basement for the use of media; among other measures, the further extension<br />

of the WLAN-infrastructure and other innovative access-technologies. Regarding<br />

the field of publishing, <strong>im</strong>provement and professionalisation of the<br />

existing university-owned publication server will be in the focus, intended<br />

to lead to a univerisity-owned publishing-infrastructure with an <strong>im</strong>pact<br />

beyond the university boundaries; besides that the <strong>im</strong>provement of access<br />

to scientific literature and, finally, the creation of a university bibliography<br />

by the kiz.<br />

6. Summary<br />

Founding the kiz, Ulm University pursued several objectives. Among<br />

them was the effort to meet and fit the additional and qualitatively new<br />

expectations concerning the range of services offered by the central services<br />

by activating synergies to be drawn from the merging of previously<br />

existing, independent service branches – i. e. without creating further entities.<br />

These new services are being increasingly demanded in the context of<br />

the use of media in teaching and of the forthcoming requirements for the<br />

establishment of a range of offers in the field of scientific further education<br />

– both of these being services on the virtual campus. The demands concerning<br />

the capacities of the integrated service-infrastructure that is to be established<br />

within the new body do, however, exceed the requirements of a mere<br />

virtualisation of teaching by far and refer to a range of services offered<br />

vast in content as well as comprehensive in including both the face-to-face<br />

campus and the virtual campus. This stretches from the support of the administrative<br />

procedures in the operative branches of the university, the professional<br />

support of the teaching in the production of media-adapted teaching<br />

materials and the provision of different communications- and telecooperations-environments<br />

to the supplying of researchers with scientific informtaion.<br />

Despite the application systems required for the running of the<br />

services are often built up and operated by a third party, the kiz achieves
