courses from the German partner-universities is being considered. In the
technical field, the further extension of the university service-portal and,
thereby, the creation and integration of further online-services for students
remains in the foreground. The kiz will care for the continuous renewing
and updating of the hardware-systems and of the network as important
basement for the use of media; among other measures, the further extension
of the WLAN-infrastructure and other innovative access-technologies. Regarding
the field of publishing, improvement and professionalisation of the
existing university-owned publication server will be in the focus, intended
to lead to a univerisity-owned publishing-infrastructure with an impact
beyond the university boundaries; besides that the improvement of access
to scientific literature and, finally, the creation of a university bibliography
by the kiz.
6. Summary
Founding the kiz, Ulm University pursued several objectives. Among
them was the effort to meet and fit the additional and qualitatively new
expectations concerning the range of services offered by the central services
by activating synergies to be drawn from the merging of previously
existing, independent service branches – i. e. without creating further entities.
These new services are being increasingly demanded in the context of
the use of media in teaching and of the forthcoming requirements for the
establishment of a range of offers in the field of scientific further education
– both of these being services on the virtual campus. The demands concerning
the capacities of the integrated service-infrastructure that is to be established
within the new body do, however, exceed the requirements of a mere
virtualisation of teaching by far and refer to a range of services offered
vast in content as well as comprehensive in including both the face-to-face
campus and the virtual campus. This stretches from the support of the administrative
procedures in the operative branches of the university, the professional
support of the teaching in the production of media-adapted teaching
materials and the provision of different communications- and telecooperations-environments
to the supplying of researchers with scientific informtaion.
