tion to the Meta Directory can be omitted. Instead, a central directory or
Virtual Directory replaces the system.
Not the directories and technological solutions but the individual users
are central to IDM. For instance, they may use a single synced password for
integrated applications („Single Password‟) and may access certain applications
with just one sign-on („Single Sign-On‟). An integrated web-portal
enables a central administration of passwords and other ID-related
processes. In the future, users may not only determine into which systems
their identities and passwords should be synced, but may also activate
workflows (for instance application for further E-Mail addresses, further
memory capacity etc).
IDM assigns distinct usernames (so-called GÖ* ID) to new accounts.
This is the basis for a unitary assignment of usernames in all linked systems.
Distinct usernames are deduced from E-Mail addresses to increase
the usefulness and decrease administrative efforts.
The existing integration of an Identity Provider (based on SAML)
makes GÖ* even more useful. Through this provider, users can access web
content outside of Göttingen (for instance publishing companies) without
further sign-on (via single sign-on). The integration of federation solutions
(see SAML, Shibboleth) into desktop applications outside the World Wide
Web enables existing grid and library applications (see Shibboleth) and will
in the future also enable reduced and single sign-on solutions.
Inter-location client management
Since midyear 2006, GÖ* has employed a system for integrative desktop
and system management. Key modules are software distribution, asset
and license management, user management and help desk. The main basis
of client management is the unification of the existing Active Directory
Services (ADS) into a GÖ*-wide Meta Directory. The web-based helpdesk-system
is the central superior system that controls other modules according
to their workflow.
In the following years, data centers will offer their customers desktop
management IT-self-service-portals. The first goals are: automated initial
supply with IT workplaces; monitoring the life cycle of hardware and software;
installing application requirements through software distribution,
