94 The Pelagian C<strong>on</strong>troversy. CHAP. in.<br />

dencies in Pelagianism that our Lord did not stand forth<br />

as <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e sole example <strong>of</strong> perfect obedience in that system ;<br />

but <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e, though <strong>the</strong> principal <strong>on</strong>e, <strong>of</strong> a successi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

perfect men that had appeared in <strong>the</strong> world extending<br />

from Abel and Enoch to Sime<strong>on</strong> and Joseph, <strong>the</strong> husband<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mary. 1 An extreme idea <strong>of</strong> freewill and human perfecti<br />

bility was in truth inc<strong>on</strong>sistent with a sound doctrine <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Incarnati<strong>on</strong>, not admitting <strong>of</strong> such a singularity in our<br />

Lord s life and character as that doctrine involved.<br />

The Pelagian, indeed, in retaliati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong><br />

degrading our Lord s humanity, charged his opp<strong>on</strong>ents with<br />

unsubstantiating it, and threw back up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> name<br />

<strong>of</strong> Apollinarists, as, with a difference <strong>of</strong> temptati<strong>on</strong>, not as<br />

signing to our Lord <strong>the</strong> same humanity which o<strong>the</strong>r men<br />

have, and so denying His true assumpti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our nature.<br />

But it was replied that our Lord took <strong>on</strong> Him <strong>the</strong> nature,<br />

but not <strong>the</strong> sin <strong>of</strong> man. He even charged his opp<strong>on</strong>ents<br />

with Manicheanism, as denying that Christ had assumed<br />

our flesh ; but <strong>the</strong> same answer was made, that <strong>the</strong> flesh<br />

was assumed, but not <strong>the</strong> corrupti<strong>on</strong>. He discovered,<br />

again, in <strong>the</strong> Catholic representati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our Lord s trial in<br />

<strong>the</strong> flesh, a combinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> both heresies modified a semi-<br />

Apollinarism in a soul imperfectly c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong> flesh,<br />

a semi-Manicheanism in a flesh imperfectly c<strong>on</strong>nected with<br />

<strong>the</strong> soul <strong>of</strong> our Lord. But it was replied, as before, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> soul <strong>of</strong> Christ had perfect c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <strong>the</strong> flesh,<br />

but not with its corrupti<strong>on</strong>. 2<br />
