CHAP. vir. <strong>of</strong> Final Perseverance. 185<br />

order to prove by our acti<strong>on</strong>s whe<strong>the</strong>r we are worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

reward or punishment in an eternal world to come. The<br />

doctrine <strong>of</strong> final perseverance is, that those acti<strong>on</strong>s are not<br />

estimated simply with regard to quantity, but also with<br />

regard to order that what c<strong>on</strong>stitutes a ; good or bad life<br />

is not <strong>the</strong> mere aggregate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, in which case it would<br />

not signify whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y came at <strong>the</strong> beginning or end <strong>of</strong><br />

life, for so l<strong>on</strong>g as <strong>the</strong>re was enough <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to satisfy <strong>the</strong><br />

Judge,<br />

it would be indifferent how <strong>the</strong> number was made<br />

up ; but <strong>the</strong>ir successi<strong>on</strong>, whe<strong>the</strong>r prior or posterior in life :<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r words, not <strong>the</strong> acts <strong>the</strong>mselves, but <strong>the</strong>ir relati<strong>on</strong><br />

to <strong>the</strong> man, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are appropriated by him or not ;<br />

for this is what <strong>the</strong>ir order <strong>of</strong> prior or posterior tests.<br />

And as <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> final perseverance as a test is<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> trial and probati<strong>on</strong> explained<br />

objecti<strong>on</strong>s to it <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> justice are <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kind<br />

which attaches to <strong>the</strong> general doctrine <strong>of</strong> trial and proba<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>. The doctrine indeed that <strong>the</strong> whole period <strong>of</strong> trial<br />

must be judged by its terminati<strong>on</strong>, prominently suggests<br />

<strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a bad terminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it, Why<br />

is this period terminated now ? As <strong>the</strong> end makes all <strong>the</strong><br />

; so <strong>the</strong><br />

difference, why could not that end have been postp<strong>on</strong>ed ?<br />

Why could not <strong>the</strong> period have been extended to sufficient<br />

length to give room for ano<strong>the</strong>r, and so, by a small addi<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> to its durati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> its effects have been re<br />

moved ? But it is evident that this objecti<strong>on</strong> applies to<br />

<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> all trial whatever, and up<strong>on</strong> whatever rule pro<br />

ceeding, whe<strong>the</strong>r that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> order <strong>of</strong> acti<strong>on</strong>s or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

aggregate simply. In ei<strong>the</strong>r case a l<strong>on</strong>ger period might,<br />

as far as we see, have produced a different issue from that<br />

<strong>of</strong> a shorter <strong>on</strong>e. The whole doctrine <strong>of</strong> trial and proba<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> is indeed incomprehensible to us ; for, whereas proba<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> must in <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case be limited, we cannot<br />

understand how a limitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it can be so arranged as to<br />

be perfectly just and equitable ; how it is that a pers<strong>on</strong> at<br />

a particular time is completely tried and proved : notwith<br />

standing which difficulty, <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> trial and proba<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> is a doctrine both <strong>of</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong> and natural religi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The test <strong>of</strong> final perseverance does indeed, in some <strong>of</strong>
