accurate or philosophical percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it ; such as arises<br />

from <strong>the</strong> mind s c<strong>on</strong>templati<strong>on</strong> and examinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> itself,<br />

and its own percepti<strong>on</strong>s ; a scrutiny into its own insight<br />

into truth, and a comparis<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different modes in<br />

which it perceives and entertains truth ; which modes or<br />

kinds <strong>of</strong> percepti<strong>on</strong> widely differ, and being with respect<br />

to some truths, distinct, complete, and absolute, are with<br />

respect to o<strong>the</strong>rs dim, c<strong>on</strong>fused, and imperfect.<br />

To judge<br />

from <strong>the</strong> way in which people in general express <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

<strong>on</strong> this subject <strong>of</strong> human ignorance, <strong>the</strong>y have no very<br />

accurate percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it ; seldom going out <strong>of</strong> certain<br />

comm<strong>on</strong>place phrases and forms <strong>of</strong> speech, forms <strong>of</strong><br />

speech, indeed, which mean much when used by those who<br />

see <strong>the</strong>ir true meaning, but mean much less, though still<br />

perhaps something, when used vaguely and without atten<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>, and because <strong>the</strong> whole is thing taken for granted<br />

immediately, and <strong>the</strong>n dismissed from <strong>the</strong> mind. This<br />

is all that <strong>the</strong><br />

general admissi<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>fessi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact,<br />

mass <strong>of</strong> men appear to attain to <strong>on</strong> this important ques<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> ; and doubtless it is, as far as it goes, a useful and<br />

serviceable c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mind especially in <strong>the</strong> case<br />

<strong>of</strong> devout pers<strong>on</strong>s, whose piety compensates for <strong>the</strong> want<br />

<strong>of</strong> clearness in <strong>the</strong>ir ideas, and sustains in <strong>the</strong>m a perpetual<br />

practical percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> this truth, toge<strong>the</strong>r with its natural<br />

fruits <strong>of</strong> humility, sobriety, and resignati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

But though it is undoubtedly a matter <strong>of</strong> regret that<br />

more should not have attained, than appear to have d<strong>on</strong>e,<br />

to something like an accurate and philosophical percepti<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own ignorance ; <strong>the</strong> explanati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> this fact is<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tained in <strong>the</strong> very statement <strong>of</strong> it, as just given. For<br />

this deeper percepti<strong>on</strong> cannot be gained, but by those<br />

minds that have g<strong>on</strong>e through something <strong>of</strong> that process<br />

<strong>of</strong> thought, which has been just referred to. Men must<br />

have reflected up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves, and examined to a certain<br />

extent <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own minds, <strong>the</strong>ir percep<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s, or modes <strong>of</strong> entertaining truth, in order to have<br />

is not <strong>on</strong>e in<br />

gained it. But this internal department<br />

which any large proporti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> men take much interest ;<br />

and a taste for this kind <strong>of</strong> inspecti<strong>on</strong> is perhaps rarer
