meaning to <strong>the</strong>m. And if so, so far as this language goes,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Apostle expresses a modified doctrine <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong><br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than an extreme <strong>on</strong>e, or predestinati<strong>on</strong> to unequal<br />

advantages, ra<strong>the</strong>r than to positive good and evil. But<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r this is so or not, such a sense <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong>ly obtains so far as <strong>the</strong> language which expresses it<br />

goes.<br />

The str<strong>on</strong>ger sense <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong>, as predestinati<strong>on</strong> to<br />

positive good and evil, is <strong>the</strong> main and pervading <strong>on</strong>e in<br />

<strong>the</strong> passage; and this sense must not be lost sight <strong>of</strong><br />

because <strong>the</strong>re may be a milder sense too in which <strong>the</strong> doc<br />

trine is asserted. It is characteristic <strong>of</strong> S. Paul to slide<br />

from <strong>on</strong>e meaning to ano<strong>the</strong>r ; and just as a counter doc<br />

trine altoge<strong>the</strong>r to that <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong> is put forth in<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r passages <strong>of</strong> Scripture, so <strong>the</strong> same passage may be<br />

more or less c<strong>on</strong>tradictory, and c<strong>on</strong>tain its own balance.<br />

But if <strong>the</strong> milder meaning <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong>re,<br />

it must not be thought that <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>ger meaning is<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore not <strong>the</strong>re too; or supposed that all that this<br />

passage means is a predestinati<strong>on</strong> to unequal privileges<br />

and advantages.<br />

There is ano<strong>the</strong>r mode <strong>of</strong> interpreting predestinati<strong>on</strong> in<br />

Scripture, so as to make <strong>the</strong> doctrine agree with <strong>the</strong> truth<br />

<strong>of</strong> freewill; viz. that <strong>of</strong> allowing predestinati<strong>on</strong> to be to<br />

eternal salvati<strong>on</strong> itself, but with <strong>the</strong> qualificati<strong>on</strong> that it is<br />

caused by <strong>the</strong> Divine foresight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> future good life <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> individual. But this is<br />

qualificati<strong>on</strong> opposed to <strong>the</strong><br />

plain meaning <strong>of</strong> those passages <strong>of</strong> Scripture in which this<br />

doctrine is set forth. These passages obviously represent<br />

predestinati<strong>on</strong> as a <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual to a<br />

predestinati<strong>on</strong><br />

good life, as well as to <strong>the</strong> reward <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e, to <strong>the</strong> means as<br />

well as to <strong>the</strong> end thus ; making a good life <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong><br />

and not <strong>the</strong> cause or reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> it. He hath<br />

predestinati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

chosen us before <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world that we<br />

should be holy .... predestinated<br />

us to be c<strong>on</strong>formed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> His S<strong>on</strong>.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> ninth chapter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Romans, just quoted, supplies<br />

<strong>the</strong> most decisive answer to this qualificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doc<br />

said <strong>the</strong>re that<br />

trine <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong> ; it being expressly<br />
