CHA.P. rv. <strong>of</strong> Original Sin. 113<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, awarding a higher<br />

or a lower rank in <strong>the</strong> uni<br />

verse. 1 And an express allusi<strong>on</strong> to a future life is made<br />

in <strong>the</strong> applicati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passage in Hermas<br />

relating to <strong>the</strong> salvati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> just men before <strong>the</strong> law, be<br />

stowed by means <strong>of</strong> a baptism after death. 2 But while a<br />

proporti<strong>on</strong>ate eternal reward, in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n,<br />

is pointed to, no positive line is as yet drawn between <strong>the</strong><br />

hea<strong>the</strong>n and <strong>the</strong> Christian states in eternity. One state<br />

with different ranks in it is ra<strong>the</strong>r suggested, and all good<br />

men c<strong>on</strong>sidered Christians in <strong>the</strong>ir degree are admitted<br />

to <strong>on</strong>e comm<strong>on</strong>, though variously arranged, kingdom <strong>of</strong><br />

heaven. 3<br />

II. But, sec<strong>on</strong>dly, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cessi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n <strong>of</strong><br />

some state <strong>of</strong> happiness after death not being aband<strong>on</strong>ed,<br />

we find, in course <strong>of</strong> time, <strong>the</strong> opini<strong>on</strong> established in <strong>the</strong><br />

Church, that original sin did exclude from that place <strong>of</strong><br />

supernatural happiness which was called <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong><br />

God, or <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> heaven. Origen, while he pointedly<br />

claims for hea<strong>the</strong>n goodness some eternal reward, and so<br />

applies <strong>the</strong> text Glory, h<strong>on</strong>our, and peace to every man<br />

that worketh good, to <strong>the</strong> Jew first, and also to <strong>the</strong> Gen<br />

tile, at <strong>the</strong> same time excludes <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n, as being still<br />

under original sin, from <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> heaven. 4 The<br />

Pelagians, with a doctrine which did not support, or ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

opposed such a c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>, deferred to an established dis<br />

tincti<strong>on</strong>, and excluded <strong>the</strong> unbaptized, whom <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

at large regarded as under <strong>the</strong> guilt <strong>of</strong> original sin, though<br />

<strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>mselves acknowledged no such sin in <strong>the</strong> first<br />
