even might be <strong>the</strong> result. For if minds have accustomed<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to cling with this exclusive force to particular<br />

points, and identify religi<strong>on</strong> as a whole with <strong>the</strong>m, who can<br />

tell <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revulsi<strong>on</strong> which would take place,<br />

could <strong>the</strong>y be brought to doubt <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ? For<br />

men go from <strong>on</strong>e extreme to ano<strong>the</strong>r, and from reposing<br />

<strong>the</strong> most absolute faith up<strong>on</strong> articles resting <strong>on</strong> small<br />

evidence, rush into disbelief <strong>of</strong> those which rest up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

str<strong>on</strong>gest. And if so, who would in all cases wish to try<br />

<strong>the</strong> experiment <strong>of</strong> a change ? Who but a philosopher with<br />

out knowledge <strong>of</strong> mankind would, for <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>of</strong> a possible<br />

advantage, endeavour in all cases to disturb even a cherished<br />

error <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> minor and pard<strong>on</strong>able class ? As if minor<br />

errors were not sometimes even a safeguard against greater<br />

<strong>on</strong>es; and as if an obstinate propensity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human mind,<br />

checked in <strong>on</strong>e directi<strong>on</strong>, would not run out in ano<strong>the</strong>r ;<br />

like a stream which, if you dam it up in <strong>on</strong>e part, breaks<br />

its bank elsewhere, and perhaps floods a whole district.<br />

Nor is this propensity to over-estimate particular truths<br />

or supposed truths c<strong>on</strong>fined to any <strong>on</strong>e communi<strong>on</strong> ; <strong>the</strong><br />

Eoman Catholic and <strong>the</strong> Protestant shows it alike ; most<br />

sects and divisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian world have <strong>the</strong>ir favourite<br />

tenets, which individuals identify with religi<strong>on</strong><br />

as a whole,<br />

and associate intimately and fundamentally with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

whole Christian prospects,<br />

as if <strong>the</strong>ir life<br />

spiritual and<br />

sanctificati<strong>on</strong> were essentially bound up with <strong>the</strong>m. They<br />

seem to see in such special<br />

tenets <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

strength, <strong>the</strong>ir stay, encouragement, and c<strong>on</strong>solati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human mind, I say, shows this great<br />

imperfecti<strong>on</strong> in it, that it is so much more able to appre<br />

ciate smaller and particular truths, real or supposed, than<br />

larger and fundamental <strong>on</strong>es. There is in <strong>the</strong> first place an<br />

advantage in this respect, bel<strong>on</strong>ging to <strong>the</strong> former, in <strong>the</strong><br />

very circumstance that <strong>the</strong>y are smaller ; <strong>the</strong>y are more<br />

easily grasped, and <strong>the</strong> whole heart embraces <strong>the</strong>m, and<br />

winds itself about <strong>the</strong>m more completely.<br />

There is in <strong>the</strong><br />

next place <strong>the</strong> stimulus <strong>of</strong> rivalry and c<strong>on</strong>tradicti<strong>on</strong>, which<br />

surrounds a peculiar and distinctive, and as such, an op<br />

posed tenet, with a halo <strong>of</strong> its own, and invests it with an
