this man receives, and that man does not receive, when<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r deserves to receive, measuring thy strength, examine<br />

Grod The vessels <strong>of</strong> mercy understand how en<br />

tirely in <strong>the</strong>ir own case mercy is gratuitous, when those,<br />

with whom <strong>the</strong>y share <strong>on</strong>e comm<strong>on</strong> lump <strong>of</strong> perditi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

receive <strong>the</strong>ir just punishment. 1<br />

In <strong>the</strong>se passages <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> obedience, <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong><br />

faith, <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> perseverance., <strong>the</strong> creati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> holy<br />

and good man, or sheep as he is called, are treated as <strong>the</strong><br />

effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine predestinati<strong>on</strong>, and are accounted for<br />

<strong>on</strong> a mysterious principle. It is, <strong>the</strong>refore, a proper gift<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is<br />

first an express definiti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> grace, under<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel dispensati<strong>on</strong>, arrived at after much thought<br />

and effort, and much handling and discussing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sub<br />

ject; a definiti<strong>on</strong> according to which <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Gospel is an assistance productive <strong>of</strong> that effect up<strong>on</strong><br />

man s life and c<strong>on</strong>duct for which it is given adjutorium<br />

cum quo fit. And this definiti<strong>on</strong> is sustained by a general<br />

body <strong>of</strong> language describing goodness and holiness as a<br />

Divine gift and a Divine creati<strong>on</strong>, not in a sec<strong>on</strong>dary and<br />

qualified but a natural and proper sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> terms, as<br />

shown by <strong>the</strong> cauti<strong>on</strong> annexed,, that this gift<br />

is not given<br />

according to merit i. e. according to any c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s which<br />

man himself previously fulfils ; by <strong>the</strong> argument from<br />
