alternately attained and fell short <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir effects: <strong>the</strong><br />

Universal Cause, however, being alike effective in ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e<br />

case, and good alike <strong>the</strong> result ; for <strong>the</strong> corrupti<strong>on</strong><br />

thing was <strong>the</strong> generati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r. 1 The sec<strong>on</strong>d class<br />

<strong>of</strong> causes was c<strong>on</strong>tingent or voluntary, operating in those<br />

creatures which had in additi<strong>on</strong> to nature <strong>the</strong> principle <strong>of</strong><br />

will. The effects, <strong>the</strong>n, which took place in <strong>the</strong> world<br />

took place necessarily, or c<strong>on</strong>tingently, according<br />

to <strong>the</strong><br />

character <strong>of</strong> those mediate and sec<strong>on</strong>dary causes which<br />

were respectively in operati<strong>on</strong> ; but in ei<strong>the</strong>r case <strong>the</strong>se<br />

causes were but mediate, and fell back up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> First<br />

derived all <strong>the</strong>ir virtue as<br />

Great Cause, from which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary <strong>on</strong>es. The Supreme Being fitted like causes to<br />

like effects, necessary to necessary, c<strong>on</strong>tingent to c<strong>on</strong>tin<br />

gent; 2 but His will it was which gave to <strong>the</strong>se causes <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

respective natures, and made <strong>on</strong>e necessary and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tingent. 3 He moved matter, and He moved will by<br />
