Here is <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> schools respecting mediate<br />

and sec<strong>on</strong>dary causes ; that events take <strong>the</strong>ir character<br />

from <strong>the</strong> causes that produce <strong>the</strong>m, and are necessary or<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tingent, according as <strong>the</strong>ir causes are <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e or <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r. Calvin refers in <strong>the</strong> passage to <strong>the</strong> distincti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> schools, with which he says he does not disagree ; and<br />

his statement is <strong>on</strong>ly ano<strong>the</strong>r form <strong>of</strong> that <strong>of</strong> : Aquinas<br />

Deus omnia movet secundum eorum c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>em ; ita<br />

quod ex causis necessariis per moti<strong>on</strong>em divinam sequuntur<br />

effectus ex necessitate, ex causis<br />

protests against indolence or carelessness in temporal or<br />

spiritual matters, as a wholly illegitimate result to fasten<br />

and says that people must act as if events<br />

<strong>on</strong> his doctrine ;<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>tingent, and not suppose that, because events are<br />

foreordained, that <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y are foreordained without<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessary means to bring <strong>the</strong>m about which ; means<br />

lie in our own c<strong>on</strong>duct and course <strong>of</strong> acti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Thus, while maintaining <strong>the</strong> Divine infallible decree <strong>of</strong><br />

predestinati<strong>on</strong>, he protests against men making that decree<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir starting point, and putting it in prior order to acti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir own ideas and thoughts about <strong>the</strong>mselves : Neque<br />
