chief agent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e that uses and turns to account <strong>the</strong><br />

acti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. If <strong>on</strong>e man furnishes ano<strong>the</strong>r with<br />

<strong>the</strong> means and resources for any undertaking, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

applies <strong>the</strong>m to it, both indeed COD tribute acti<strong>on</strong> but <strong>the</strong><br />

;<br />

latter is <strong>the</strong> chief c<strong>on</strong>tributor, and would, in ordinary<br />

language,<br />

be called <strong>the</strong> doer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work. Thus to <strong>the</strong><br />

act<strong>of</strong> learning a teacher and a learner both c<strong>on</strong>tribute,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e by giving informati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r by apprehending<br />

it ; but <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> learning is <strong>the</strong> learner s ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

<strong>the</strong> teacher s act. Apply this distincti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> human will using <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> Divine grace for <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> a holy life. While <strong>the</strong> giver and <strong>the</strong> user <strong>of</strong> that<br />

assistance are both agents in that work, <strong>the</strong> user is <strong>the</strong><br />

principal <strong>on</strong>e. 1 In cases where <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> means, if sup<br />

plied, takes place easily and as a matter <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong><br />

result may be properly referred to <strong>the</strong> supplier ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

<strong>the</strong> user <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. But <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> will in using grace<br />

is no easy or matter-<strong>of</strong>-course <strong>on</strong>e, but involves much effort<br />

and self-denial.<br />

The combinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> grace with freewill thus issued in<br />

<strong>the</strong> asserti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> an independent freewill <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e hand,<br />

while this logical result was avoided <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>on</strong>ly by<br />

a recourse to <strong>the</strong> opposite extreme. It was seen that an<br />

assisting grace could <strong>on</strong>ly be protected by making it some<br />

thing more than assisting, and that <strong>the</strong> will must have <strong>the</strong><br />

credit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unassisted acceptance and use <strong>of</strong> it, unless it<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>trolled it. by The original formula, <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

issued <strong>on</strong> this side in <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> a c<strong>on</strong>trolling and<br />

primitive doctrine rose, with <strong>the</strong>ir respective accompani<br />

ments and c<strong>on</strong>sequences, <strong>the</strong> Pelagian and <strong>Augustinian</strong><br />

systems.<br />

Pelagianism <strong>the</strong>n started with <strong>the</strong> positi<strong>on</strong>, that, however<br />

necessary Divine assistance might be for a good work<br />

as a whole, <strong>the</strong>re was at <strong>the</strong> bottom a good act or move-<br />
