CHAP. v. <strong>of</strong> Predestinati<strong>on</strong>. 129<br />

The Jews who would not believe our Lord s miracles were<br />

left in <strong>the</strong> mass <strong>of</strong> perditi<strong>on</strong>, and why ? The Evangelist<br />

&quot;<br />

tells us, That <strong>the</strong> saying <strong>of</strong> Esaias <strong>the</strong> prophet might be<br />

fulfilled which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report,<br />

and to whom hath <strong>the</strong> arm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord been revealed?<br />

Therefore <strong>the</strong>y could not believe, because that Esaias said<br />

again, He hath blinded <strong>the</strong>ir eyes and hardened <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

hearts, that <strong>the</strong>y should not see with <strong>the</strong>ir eyes and under<br />

stand with <strong>the</strong>ir hearts, and be c<strong>on</strong>verted, and I should<br />

heal <strong>the</strong>m.&quot; But <strong>the</strong> hearts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tyrians and Sid<strong>on</strong>ians<br />

would have believed if<br />

were not thus hardened, for <strong>the</strong>y<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had seen such miracles. That <strong>the</strong>y were able to<br />

believe, however, was <strong>of</strong> no service to <strong>the</strong>m, when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were not predestinated by Him whose judgments are un<br />

searchable and His ways past finding out ; any more than<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir not being able to believe would have been <strong>of</strong> disser<br />

vice to <strong>the</strong>m if <strong>the</strong>y had been thus predestinated by God<br />

to <strong>the</strong> illuminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir blindness and <strong>the</strong> taking away<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir heart <strong>of</strong> st<strong>on</strong>e. 1 With respect to <strong>the</strong> Tyrians and<br />

Sid<strong>on</strong>ians, indeed, <strong>the</strong>re may be possibly some o<strong>the</strong>r inter<br />

pretati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passage ; but that no <strong>on</strong>e comes to Christ<br />

except it be given him, and that this is given <strong>on</strong>ly to those<br />

who are elected in Him before <strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

this must bey<strong>on</strong>d all questi<strong>on</strong> be admitted by every <strong>on</strong>e<br />

whose heart is not deaf to, while his ear hears, <strong>the</strong> Divine<br />

oracles. De D<strong>on</strong>o Perseverantice, c. xiv.<br />

: Again The Lord knows those that are His. All<br />

things work toge<strong>the</strong>r for good for those al<strong>on</strong>e who are<br />

called according to His purpose <strong>the</strong> called ; according to<br />

His purpose, not <strong>the</strong> called simply, not <strong>the</strong> many called,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> few chosen. For whom He did foreknow He also<br />

did predestinate to be c<strong>on</strong>formed to <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> His S<strong>on</strong>,<br />

that he might be <strong>the</strong> firstborn am<strong>on</strong>g many brethren ; and<br />

whom He did predestinate <strong>the</strong>m also He called ; and whom<br />

He called <strong>the</strong>m also He justified and whom He ;<br />

justified<br />
