1 78 <strong>Augustinian</strong> <strong>Doctrine</strong> <strong>of</strong> Grace. CHAP. TI.<br />

necessary ?<br />

Were this grace, <strong>the</strong>n, maintained as a super<br />

fluity, <strong>the</strong>re might c<strong>on</strong>sistently be maintained toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with it ano<strong>the</strong>r grace short <strong>of</strong> it, and <strong>on</strong>ly sufficient ; but<br />

it is maintained as remedial to a fatal disease, as supple<br />

mental to an absolute want. The first dispensati<strong>on</strong> did<br />

not it<br />

provide<br />

because man could do without it <strong>the</strong> ; sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

provides it because he cannot. If an irresistible grace <strong>the</strong>n<br />

is maintained at all, it cannot be maintained as a grace<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r or merely assisting <strong>on</strong>e, but must be<br />

maintained as <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grospel dispensati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

grace by <strong>the</strong> operati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> which all <strong>the</strong> goodness and holi<br />

ness <strong>the</strong>re is in men arises. To endeavour, <strong>the</strong>n, to com<br />

bine it in <strong>on</strong>e system with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r would be to treat it<br />

apart from and in oppositi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> very ground <strong>on</strong> which<br />

we suppose it to exist. The doctrine <strong>of</strong> an absolute pre<br />

destinati<strong>on</strong> cannot combine with any o<strong>the</strong>r account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

origin <strong>of</strong> human goodness<br />

ge<strong>the</strong>r, or applied to <strong>the</strong> whole. An antecedent moral<br />

inability in <strong>the</strong> whole human mass is <strong>the</strong> very occasi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> that decree, which is made for no o<strong>the</strong>r reas<strong>on</strong> than<br />

to provide a remedy for it. It follows, that while those<br />

who are affected by its remedial provisi<strong>on</strong>s are endowed<br />

with that certainty <strong>of</strong> attaining to holiness which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

; it must ei<strong>the</strong>r be denied alto<br />

impart ; those whom <strong>the</strong> decree does not affect remain in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir original inability and ; <strong>the</strong>refore, that, besides those<br />

who have an irresistible grace, <strong>the</strong>re are n<strong>on</strong>e who have<br />

sufficient. 1<br />

Bishop Overall appears to have firmity, and that <strong>the</strong> salvati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

fallen into <strong>the</strong> error <strong>of</strong> endeavour- men might be more certain, that<br />

ing to combine irresistible grace to He thought good to add a special<br />

some with sufficient grace to all: grace, more efficacious and abun-<br />

These two things agree very well dant, to be communicated to whom<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r, that God, in <strong>the</strong> first He pleased, by which <strong>the</strong>y might<br />

place, proposed salvati<strong>on</strong> in Christ not <strong>on</strong>ly be able to believe and<br />

to all, if <strong>the</strong>y believed, and comm<strong>on</strong> obey, if so inclined, but also actuand<br />

sufficient grace in <strong>the</strong> means ally be inclined, believe, obey, and<br />

divinely ordained, if men were not persevere. Overall <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Quinwanting<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God and quarticular C<strong>on</strong>troversy, quoted by<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit ; <strong>the</strong>n, sec<strong>on</strong>dly, Mr. Goode, Effects <strong>of</strong> Infant Bapthat<br />

He might help human in- tism, p. 129.
