mankind which had been in no way relieved from <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

<strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n world. It may be c<strong>on</strong>sidered doubtful to what<br />

precise extent S. Clement <strong>of</strong> Alexandria, <strong>the</strong> earlier schools<br />

great exp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>on</strong> this questi<strong>on</strong>, represents <strong>the</strong> sentiments<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual early Church at large up<strong>on</strong> it. He acknow<br />

ledges in his writings <strong>the</strong> existence, and answers <strong>the</strong> objec<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>of</strong> a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church that did not 1<br />

agree with him.<br />

But it is difficult to j tidge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> size or importance <strong>of</strong> this<br />

part ; and a great writer is in later ages legitimately sup<br />

posed, in <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> express evidence to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary,<br />

and if traditi<strong>on</strong> has attached authority to his name, to<br />

represent <strong>the</strong> mind <strong>of</strong> his age.<br />

Clement <strong>of</strong> Alexandria, <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>on</strong> this subject, takes what<br />

may be called <strong>the</strong> natural view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> facts which meet his<br />

eye. He acknowledges <strong>the</strong> noble affecti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> moral<br />

virtues, even <strong>the</strong> religious acts, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n as real and<br />

genuine, <strong>on</strong>ly as not reaching so high a standard as those<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian. The authority <strong>of</strong> Scripture is claimed,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Apostle is cited as saying that <strong>the</strong> uncircurncisi<strong>on</strong><br />

kept <strong>the</strong> 2<br />

righteousness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law. There was a first puri<br />

ficati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul, which resulted in abstaining from evil ;<br />

a 3<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d, which advanced to positive goodness. Attenti<strong>on</strong><br />

is drawn to <strong>the</strong> moral less<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n poets, to <strong>the</strong><br />

4 labours <strong>of</strong> lawgivers, to <strong>the</strong> ascetic fruits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buddhist<br />

and 5 Brahman religi<strong>on</strong>s, to <strong>the</strong> worship which A<strong>the</strong>ns igno-<br />

rantly paid to <strong>the</strong> true God.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n, as <strong>the</strong> highest effort<br />
