man s guilt cannot be transferred to ano<strong>the</strong>r. This truth<br />

<strong>of</strong> natural reas<strong>on</strong> mingled intimately in <strong>the</strong> statements <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> early fa<strong>the</strong>rs with <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong> so ; inti<br />

mately indeed, that <strong>of</strong>ten no definite meaning can be ex<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r, and side by side. 1 The c<strong>on</strong>sequence is, that<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>s accustomed to <strong>the</strong> later <strong>the</strong>ological<br />

this doctrine have been <strong>of</strong>ten dissatisfied, when <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

Theology began so<strong>on</strong> to draw out each separately ; and this<br />

Church, wrote as <strong>the</strong>ologians with a str<strong>on</strong>g bias in favour<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural truth; and gave it, in <strong>the</strong>ir scheme <strong>of</strong><br />
