<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> original sin with Scripture, and to prove<br />

that in Scripture <strong>the</strong>re is no significati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> any corruj)ti<strong>on</strong><br />

or deprivati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> our souls by Adam s sin, he has to<br />

explain away texts. The text Rom. v. 18. By <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e judgment came up<strong>on</strong> all men to c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

asserts <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong>, KaTaKpi/Jia,<br />

<strong>of</strong> all mankind as <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sin <strong>of</strong> Adam. Taylor explains damna<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> first as poena damni, a loss <strong>of</strong> a higher state ; and,<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dly, <strong>of</strong> temporal death which was <strong>the</strong> whole event,<br />

for it names no o<strong>the</strong>r according to that saying <strong>of</strong> S. Paul,<br />

&quot; In Adam we all die.&quot; But this is an artificial explana<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Scripture. It is true, as he observes, that <strong>the</strong><br />

KarcLKpifjia passed up<strong>on</strong> all a&amp;gt; men, sfi Travrzs tf/jLaprov<br />

(p. 380); but this can <strong>on</strong>ly show that <strong>the</strong> natural truth is<br />

maintained in Scripture toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> mysterious <strong>on</strong>e,<br />

not that <strong>the</strong> mysterious <strong>on</strong>e is not maintained. So <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

text Death passed up<strong>on</strong> all men ; for that all have sinned,<br />

he says, all men, that is, <strong>the</strong> generality <strong>of</strong> mankind, all that<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs that died before, died<br />

lived till <strong>the</strong>y could sin ;<br />

j.n <strong>the</strong>ir nature, not in <strong>the</strong>ir sin. 1<br />

p. 381. He owns,<br />

however, at last, that <strong>the</strong> language <strong>of</strong> Scripture is against<br />

him, by falling back up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> justice<br />

as over<br />

ruling <strong>the</strong> natural meaning <strong>of</strong> such language. How can<br />

&quot;<br />

&quot;<br />

it be just that <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong> should pass up<strong>on</strong> us<br />

for Adam s sin ? p. 380.<br />

So up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> text, Behold I was shapen in wickedness,<br />

and in sin hath my mo<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>on</strong>ceived me, he says, 4 1<br />

answer, that <strong>the</strong> words are a Hebraism, and signify nothing<br />

but an aggrandati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> his sinfulness, and are intended for<br />

&quot;<br />

a high expressi<strong>on</strong>, meaning that I am wholly and entirely<br />

wicked.&quot; For <strong>the</strong> verificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> which expositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are divers parallel places in <strong>the</strong> Holy Scriptures :<br />

&quot; Thou<br />

wast my hope, when I hanged yet up<strong>on</strong> my mo<strong>the</strong>r s<br />

breast and The ;&quot; ungodly as so<strong>on</strong> as <strong>the</strong>y be born, <strong>the</strong>y go<br />

because it cannot be true in<br />

astray and speak lies,&quot; which,<br />

<strong>the</strong> letter, must be an idiotism or <strong>of</strong><br />

propriety phrase, apt<br />

to explicate <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, and signify <strong>on</strong>ly a ready, a prompt,<br />

a great, and universal wickedness. The like to this is that<br />

&quot;<br />

saying <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pharisees, Thou wert altoge<strong>the</strong>r born in sin,
