opini<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> schools <strong>on</strong> this subject. Archbishop Lau<br />

rence asserts <strong>the</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong> maintained by <strong>the</strong> school<br />

men to be, a predestinati<strong>on</strong> in c<strong>on</strong>sequence <strong>of</strong> foreseen<br />

good works in <strong>the</strong> individual. Almighty Grod before <strong>the</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world were laid, surveying in His com<br />

prehensive idea, or, as <strong>the</strong>y phrased it, in His prescience<br />

<strong>of</strong> simple intelligence, <strong>the</strong> possibilities <strong>of</strong> all things, before<br />

He determined <strong>the</strong>ir actual existence, foresaw, if mankind<br />

were created, although He willed <strong>the</strong> salvati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> all, and<br />

was inclined to all indifferently, yet that some would de<br />

serve eternal happiness, and o<strong>the</strong>rs eternal misery and<br />

;<br />

that, <strong>the</strong>refore, He approved and elected <strong>the</strong> former, but<br />

disapproved or reprobated <strong>the</strong> latter. Thus grounding<br />

electi<strong>on</strong> up<strong>on</strong> foreknowledge, <strong>the</strong>y c<strong>on</strong>templated it not as<br />

an arbitrary principle, separating <strong>on</strong>e individual from an<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, under <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> a blind chance, or an irrati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

but <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary, as a wise and just <strong>on</strong>e, which<br />

caprice ;<br />

presupposes a diversity <strong>of</strong> nature between those who are<br />

accepted, and those who are rejected. Persuaded that Grod<br />

is <strong>the</strong> fountain <strong>of</strong> all good, that from His Divine preordi<br />

nati<strong>on</strong> freely flows <strong>the</strong> stream <strong>of</strong> grace, which refreshes and<br />

invigorates <strong>the</strong> soul, <strong>the</strong>y believed that He has regulated<br />

His predeterminati<strong>on</strong> by <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soil through<br />

which His grace passes, and <strong>the</strong> effects which in any case<br />

it produces, not restricting His favours, but distributing<br />

<strong>the</strong>m with an impartial hand ; equally disposed toward all<br />

men, but, because all are not equally (disposed toward Him,<br />

distinguishing <strong>on</strong>ly such as prove deserving <strong>of</strong> His bounty.<br />

They c<strong>on</strong>sidered <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual as<br />

<strong>the</strong> meritorious basis <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong>. 1<br />

The first remark that this passage suggests, is that <strong>the</strong><br />

writer c<strong>on</strong>fuses all <strong>the</strong> schoolmen toge<strong>the</strong>r, and attributes<br />

<strong>on</strong>e comm<strong>on</strong> opini<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>on</strong> this subject ; whereas<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were different schools am<strong>on</strong>gst <strong>the</strong>m, as am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

modern thinkers, some taking <strong>the</strong> predestinarian side, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs that <strong>of</strong> freewill ; though <strong>the</strong> great names are chiefly<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> former side. The writer, however, treats <strong>the</strong>m all<br />
