CHAP. rx. <strong>of</strong> Necessity. 237<br />

was <strong>the</strong> First Great Cause: His will <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> all<br />

all events : it could not<br />

things, <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> all moti<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

be frustrated, it must always be fulfilled : God hath d<strong>on</strong>e<br />

whatsoever He would omnia qucecunque voluit fecit, in<br />

codo et in terra. This was c<strong>on</strong>tained in <strong>the</strong> very idea <strong>of</strong><br />

Omnipotence ; for no agency can be impeded but by<br />

str<strong>on</strong>ger agency, and n<strong>on</strong>e can be str<strong>on</strong>ger than Omnipo<br />

tence : it was c<strong>on</strong>tained in <strong>the</strong> very idea <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine<br />

whose will is<br />

Felicity ; for no <strong>on</strong>e can be perfectly happy<br />

not fulfilled, and <strong>the</strong> Supreme Being is perfectly happy.<br />

Though <strong>the</strong> Divine Will, <strong>the</strong>n, acted by mediate and<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>dary causes, both in <strong>the</strong> physical and moral world,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se causes were no more than mediate <strong>on</strong>es, and fell back<br />

up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> First Great Cause, from which <strong>the</strong>y derived all<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir efficacy. Nor, because a sec<strong>on</strong>dary cause failed <strong>of</strong> its<br />

effect, was <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong>refore, any failure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

First Cause. One particular cause was impeded in its<br />

operati<strong>on</strong> by ano<strong>the</strong>r ; <strong>the</strong> acti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> fire by that <strong>of</strong> water,<br />

<strong>the</strong> digestive functi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stomach by <strong>the</strong> coarseness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> food : but <strong>the</strong> qualities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water and <strong>the</strong> food<br />

were also particular causes, acting under <strong>the</strong> Universal<br />

Cause as much as those which <strong>the</strong>y impeded. Thus what<br />

seemed to recede from <strong>the</strong> Divine Will according to <strong>on</strong>e<br />

and <strong>the</strong> failure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

order, returned to it under ano<strong>the</strong>r ;<br />
