fa<strong>the</strong>r, as he can be said to have d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r s acti<strong>on</strong> ;<br />

and <strong>the</strong>refore we cannot possibly be guilty for it, for guilt<br />

is an obligati<strong>on</strong> to punishment for having d<strong>on</strong>e it ; <strong>the</strong><br />

acti<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> guilt are relatives <strong>on</strong>e cannot be d<strong>on</strong>e<br />

without <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, something must be d<strong>on</strong>e inwardly or<br />

outwardly, or <strong>the</strong>re can be no guilt. But <strong>the</strong>n for <strong>the</strong> evil<br />

<strong>of</strong> punishment, that may pass fur<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> acti<strong>on</strong>. If<br />

it passes up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> innocent it is not a punishment to <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

but an evil inflicted in right <strong>of</strong> domini<strong>on</strong> ; but yet by<br />

reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> afflicted to him that hath<br />

sinned, to him it is a punishment. But if it passes up<strong>on</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs that are not innocent, <strong>the</strong>n it is a punishment to<br />

both ; to <strong>the</strong> first principally ; to <strong>the</strong> descendants or rela<br />

tives for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r s sake, his sin being imputed so far,<br />

p. 379. There is no necessity to affirm that we are<br />

sinners in Adam any more than by imputati<strong>on</strong>. p. 378.<br />

Taylor c<strong>on</strong>siders this view <strong>of</strong> imputati<strong>on</strong> as a middle<br />

<strong>on</strong>e between <strong>the</strong> received and <strong>the</strong> Pelagian view <strong>of</strong> original<br />

sin. I do not approve <strong>of</strong> that gloss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pelagians<br />

that in Adam we are made sinners by imitati<strong>on</strong>, and much<br />

less <strong>of</strong> that which affirms that we are made so properly<br />

and formally. But made sinners signifies used like sinners,<br />

in which<br />

so as justified signifies treated like just pers<strong>on</strong>s ;<br />

interpretati<strong>on</strong> I follow S. Paul, not <strong>the</strong> Pelagians. p.<br />

But what is gained toward rec<strong>on</strong>ciling <strong>the</strong> doctrine<br />

<strong>of</strong> original sin with our natural ideas, by substituting <strong>the</strong><br />

imputati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Adam s sin for sin in Adam ? If it is<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trary to reas<strong>on</strong> that a man should be a party to sin<br />

committed before he was born, it is c<strong>on</strong>trary to justice<br />

that a sin in which he was no partaker should be imputed<br />

to him, and that he should be punished for it. It is true,<br />

he says,<br />

l<br />

If <strong>the</strong> evil <strong>of</strong> punishment passes up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

innocent, it is not a punishment to <strong>the</strong>m, but an evil<br />

inflicted by right <strong>of</strong> domini<strong>on</strong>, and <strong>the</strong>refore Eabbi<br />
