predeterminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> will by this medieval school, 2<br />

who maintained that <strong>the</strong>re could be but <strong>on</strong>e true cause <strong>of</strong><br />

every event, all o<strong>the</strong>r causes being sec<strong>on</strong>dary<br />

volved in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> evil acti<strong>on</strong>s, that God was <strong>the</strong> author<br />

<strong>of</strong> evil, by distincti<strong>on</strong>s which it is not necessary here to<br />

state ; yet <strong>the</strong> same writers referred to <strong>the</strong> fact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall<br />

as <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong>. 3 Predestinarian<br />

preachers, again, guided half by sentiment and<br />

half by <strong>the</strong>ory, are accustomed, though using <strong>the</strong> scriptural<br />

ground as <strong>the</strong>ir basis <strong>on</strong> this questi<strong>on</strong>, to speak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

doctrine <strong>of</strong> freewill as an insult to <strong>the</strong> Divine Power, which<br />
