perly speaking, <strong>the</strong> rati<strong>on</strong>al creature, which is capable <strong>of</strong><br />

life eternal, is c<strong>on</strong>ducted up to it, or transmitted to it by<br />

G-od. Of which transmissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> pre-exists in <strong>the</strong><br />

mind <strong>of</strong> God, even as <strong>the</strong>re exists generally <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ordinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> all things whatever to <strong>the</strong> end. But <strong>the</strong><br />

reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> anything being d<strong>on</strong>e is a certain pre-existence in<br />

<strong>the</strong> mind <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thing itself to be d<strong>on</strong>e ; whence<br />

<strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transmissi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rati<strong>on</strong>al creature to<br />

life eternal is called predestinati<strong>on</strong> nam destinare est<br />

mittere. 1 While <strong>the</strong> cause, <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>of</strong> natural virtue is <strong>the</strong><br />

Divine Power acting in its ordinary functi<strong>on</strong>, as prede<br />

termining universally <strong>the</strong> created wills <strong>of</strong> men, <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong><br />

supernatural virtue in man is <strong>the</strong> Divine Power acting in pre<br />

destinati<strong>on</strong>, or in <strong>the</strong> executi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> a certain special decree.<br />

The virtue which qualifies man for good as defined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Divine Law, in distincti<strong>on</strong> to reas<strong>on</strong>, cannot be caused by<br />

human acts <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> principle is reas<strong>on</strong>, but is caused<br />

in us by <strong>the</strong> Divine operati<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>e. 2 And this Divine<br />

operati<strong>on</strong> is carried <strong>on</strong> by means <strong>of</strong> that machinery <strong>of</strong> in<br />

fused supernatural virtues above described. For as God<br />

provides for His natural creatures in such wise, that He<br />

not <strong>on</strong>ly moves <strong>the</strong>m to natural acts, but even endows<br />

<strong>the</strong>m with certain forms and virtues to act as principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> acti<strong>on</strong> and to be in <strong>the</strong>mselves dispositi<strong>on</strong>s to such<br />

acti<strong>on</strong> ; so into those whom He moves to attain eternal<br />

and supernatural good He infuses certain supernatural<br />

forms or qualities, by which <strong>the</strong>y are sweetly and promptly<br />

disposed to attain that good. 3<br />
