C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>. CHAP. XT.<br />

<strong>the</strong> same mistakes ; that <strong>the</strong>y must <strong>on</strong>e day see <strong>the</strong> limits<br />

<strong>of</strong> human reas<strong>on</strong>, distinguish what <strong>the</strong>y know from what<br />

<strong>the</strong>y do not know, and draw <strong>the</strong> necessary c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>, that<br />

<strong>on</strong> some questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y cannot insist <strong>on</strong> any <strong>on</strong>e absolute<br />

truth, and c<strong>on</strong>demn each o<strong>the</strong>r accordingly. But <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>on</strong><br />

does not approach at present any very clear fulfilment.<br />

The limits <strong>of</strong> human reas<strong>on</strong> are perhaps better understood<br />

in <strong>the</strong> world now than <strong>the</strong>y ever were before ; and such a<br />

knowledge has evidently an effect up<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>troversy, to a<br />

certain extent modifying and chastening it. Those who<br />

remind men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ignorance use an argument which,<br />

however it may fall short <strong>of</strong> striking with its full philoso<br />

phical strength, and producing its due effect, appeals to an<br />

undeniable truth, before which all human souls must bow.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> most ardent minds, in <strong>the</strong> very heat <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tro<br />

versy, have an indistinct suspici<strong>on</strong> that a str<strong>on</strong>g ground<br />

has been established in this quarter. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand,<br />

this knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong> human reas<strong>on</strong> is not, and<br />

perhaps never will be, for reas<strong>on</strong>s which I have given, very<br />

acute or accurate in <strong>the</strong> minds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mass ; while <strong>the</strong><br />

tendency to <strong>on</strong>e-sided views and to hasty assumpti<strong>on</strong> is<br />

str<strong>on</strong>g, and is aided by passi<strong>on</strong> and self-love, as well as by<br />

better feeling misapplied. On <strong>the</strong> whole, <strong>the</strong>refore, while<br />

improved philosophy has perhaps entirely destroyed some<br />

great false assumpti<strong>on</strong>s which have reigned in <strong>the</strong> world,<br />

so that <strong>the</strong>se will never rise up again, it cannot subdue <strong>the</strong><br />

temper and spirit which make such assumpti<strong>on</strong>s. It is<br />

able occasi<strong>on</strong>ally to check and qualify, but it cannot be<br />

expected that it will ever habitually regulate, <strong>the</strong>ological<br />

thought and c<strong>on</strong>troversy. It will from time to time step<br />

in as a m<strong>on</strong>itor, and take advantage <strong>of</strong> a pause and quiet<br />

interval to impress its less<strong>on</strong> up<strong>on</strong> mankind, to bring <strong>the</strong>m<br />

back to reflecti<strong>on</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y have been carried too far, and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>vert for <strong>the</strong> time a sense <strong>of</strong> error into a more cautious<br />

view <strong>of</strong> truth but it will never ;<br />

perhaps do more than this.<br />

Unable to balance and settle, it will give a useful oscillati<strong>on</strong><br />

to <strong>the</strong> human mind, an alternati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> enthusiasm and judg<br />

ment, <strong>of</strong> excitement and repose.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> meantime it <strong>on</strong>ly remains that those who differ
