regenerati<strong>on</strong>. A slight c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> will be enough to<br />

show how intimately this doctrine is c<strong>on</strong>nected with <strong>the</strong><br />

and that <strong>on</strong>e who holds an ex<br />

general doctrine <strong>of</strong> grace ;<br />

treme, and <strong>on</strong>e who holds a modified doctrine <strong>of</strong> grace in<br />

general, cannot hold <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> baptismal regenerati<strong>on</strong><br />

in <strong>the</strong> same sense. If a latitude <strong>of</strong> opini<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n, may be<br />

allowed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> general questi<strong>on</strong>, it seems to follow that an<br />

equal latitude may be allowed <strong>on</strong> this fur<strong>the</strong>r and more<br />

particular <strong>on</strong>e and that if an extreme ;<br />

predestinarian, and<br />

a maintainer <strong>of</strong> freewill can maintain and teach <strong>the</strong>ir re<br />

spective doctrines within <strong>the</strong> same communi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y need<br />

not exclude each o<strong>the</strong>r when <strong>the</strong>y come to give to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

respective doctrines <strong>the</strong>ir necessary and legitimate appli<br />

cati<strong>on</strong> in a particular case. I cannot, <strong>the</strong>refore, but think,<br />

that fur<strong>the</strong>r reflecti<strong>on</strong> will, <strong>on</strong> this and o<strong>the</strong>r questi<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

modify <strong>the</strong> oppositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two parties in our Church to<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r, and show that <strong>the</strong>ir disagreement is not so great<br />

as in <strong>the</strong> heat <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>troversy <strong>the</strong>y supposed it to be. Dif<br />

ferences <strong>of</strong> opini<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>re will always be in every religious<br />

communi<strong>on</strong>, so l<strong>on</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> human mind is as variously<br />

c<strong>on</strong>stituted as it is, and so l<strong>on</strong>g as proper liberty is allowed<br />

it to express and unfold this variety. But it depends <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> discreti<strong>on</strong> and temper <strong>of</strong> religious men to what extent<br />

<strong>the</strong>y will allow <strong>the</strong>se differences to carry <strong>the</strong>m ; whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong>y will retain <strong>the</strong>m up<strong>on</strong> a comm<strong>on</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> Christian<br />

communi<strong>on</strong> and fellowship, or raise <strong>the</strong>m into an occasi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> separati<strong>on</strong> and mutual exclusi<strong>on</strong>.
