CHAP. x. <strong>of</strong> Predestinati<strong>on</strong>. 261<br />

The doctrine <strong>of</strong> necessity, however, explained in <strong>the</strong><br />

last chapter, and <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong>, are in sub<br />

stance <strong>the</strong> same doctrine, and <strong>on</strong>ly differ in <strong>the</strong>ir ground,<br />

which is in <strong>on</strong>e a ground <strong>of</strong> philosophy, in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

Scripture. The schoolmen attached indeed to <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

doctrines different functi<strong>on</strong>s and operati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine<br />

Power. Under <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e, God acted as universal mover ;<br />

under <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r as special mover ; under <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e He ex<br />

erted a natural power, under <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r a spiritual or grace ;<br />

under <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e He moved men to a good proporti<strong>on</strong>ate to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir nature, under <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r to a good exceeding <strong>the</strong> pro<br />

porti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> nature *<br />

; under <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e He supported <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

goodness <strong>of</strong> man unfallen, under <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r He healed man<br />

fallen. And in all acts in which <strong>the</strong> special power operated,<br />

<strong>the</strong> general power operated too : so that God acted in both<br />

capacities, in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same act. 2 But thus described<br />

as two separate and distinct acti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> universal and<br />

special acti<strong>on</strong> were really <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> same acti<strong>on</strong>, in a higher<br />

and lower degree, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine motive Power over <strong>the</strong><br />

human will.<br />

Thus clearly and str<strong>on</strong>gly laid down, however, <strong>the</strong><br />

doctrine <strong>of</strong> Aquinas and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Augustinian</strong> schoolmen <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> predestinati<strong>on</strong> has been mistaken in a well-<br />
