do not know it is probably a mercy to <strong>the</strong>m ; for <strong>the</strong> very<br />

same hasty and audacious temper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intellect which<br />

leads <strong>the</strong>m to build so much up<strong>on</strong> assumpti<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> nature<br />

<strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y have never examined, would, had <strong>the</strong>y<br />

examined it, and so arrived at a real percepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

unknown nature, have inclined <strong>the</strong>m to reject such truths.<br />

Thus, in compassi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> infirmity <strong>of</strong> man, a merciful<br />

Providence hides his ignorance from him ; and by a kind<br />

deceit, such as parents use to <strong>the</strong>ir children, allows him to<br />

suppose that he knows what he does not know. He is thus<br />

saved from unbelief, and <strong>on</strong>ly falls into a well-meaning,<br />

though foolish and presumptuous, dogmatism.<br />

And now, to bring <strong>the</strong>se remarks to bear <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject<br />

<strong>of</strong> this treatise, <strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Divine grace is a questi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Divine Power. Grace is power. That power whereby<br />

Grod works in nature is called power. That power whereby<br />

He works in <strong>the</strong> wills <strong>of</strong> His reas<strong>on</strong>able creatures is called<br />

grace.<br />

With respect, <strong>the</strong>n, to <strong>the</strong> attribute <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine<br />

Power, S. Augustine and his school took up, in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

instance, a hasty and ill-c<strong>on</strong>sidered positi<strong>on</strong>, which, <strong>on</strong>ce<br />

adopted, committed <strong>the</strong>m to extreme and repulsive results.<br />

And <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir adopting such a positi<strong>on</strong> was, that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were insufficiently acquainted with <strong>the</strong> limits <strong>of</strong><br />

human reas<strong>on</strong>. For it must be evident to any pers<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

reflecti<strong>on</strong>, that a want <strong>of</strong> discernment <strong>on</strong> this is subject not<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly an error in itself, but can hardly fail to be <strong>the</strong> source<br />

<strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r errors ; because pers<strong>on</strong>s who entertain a certain<br />

idea with respect to <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge, naturally proceed to<br />

act up<strong>on</strong> it and to make asserti<strong>on</strong>s ; and it must be a chance<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r asserti<strong>on</strong>s made under such circumstances are<br />

correct. I would not be understood, however, to cast any<br />

blame up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se writers. The limits <strong>of</strong> human reas<strong>on</strong><br />

are not easy to discern. It is not easy, as I have said, to<br />

judge our own pretensi<strong>on</strong>s, and distinguish between <strong>on</strong>e<br />

part and ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> that whole body <strong>of</strong> ideas and assump<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s which we find within our minds. Some philosophers<br />

have settled <strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong> summarily, by saying that we<br />

know nothing ; o<strong>the</strong>rs have extended <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong> human
