interest which does not attach to undisputed truths. The<br />

broad doctrines <strong>of</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong> are defective in this appeal<br />

and truths which<br />

to our interest, because <strong>the</strong>y are so broad ;<br />

all hold are thought little <strong>of</strong> comparatively, because all<br />

hold <strong>the</strong>m. What merit is <strong>the</strong>re in<br />

believing what every<br />

body else believes ? We are thrown in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> such<br />

truths up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> intrinsic gravity and importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

truths <strong>the</strong>mselves, to <strong>the</strong> exclusi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> that adventitious<br />

interest which accrues from <strong>the</strong> really irrelevant and im<br />

pertinent c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> who hold <strong>the</strong>m that we main<br />

tain and accept <strong>the</strong>m in distincti<strong>on</strong> to o<strong>the</strong>rs who do not.<br />

Men thus glory in a privilege while <strong>the</strong>y pass over coldly<br />

and slightingly a comm<strong>on</strong> benefit. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

distinctive tenet <strong>the</strong>y feel <strong>the</strong>mselves champi<strong>on</strong>s ; <strong>the</strong> befrienders<br />

<strong>of</strong> truth, and not its<br />

disciples <strong>on</strong>ly; its patr<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

and thrown<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than its s<strong>on</strong>s. Stripped <strong>of</strong> this foreign,<br />

back <strong>on</strong> its own intrinsic interest, truth is apt to be a some<br />

what cold and insipid thing to <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> men at<br />

least in <strong>the</strong>ir average state <strong>of</strong> mind ; though<br />

sickness or<br />

adversity will sometimes reveal to <strong>the</strong>m this truth, this<br />

solid, this really sublime and native interest bel<strong>on</strong>ging to<br />

it. Ordinarily, <strong>the</strong>y are too apt to be little interested in<br />

it, unless supported by some external aid <strong>of</strong> this kind.<br />

There is again ano<strong>the</strong>r and a better reas<strong>on</strong> than ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

those which have been given for <strong>the</strong> disproporti<strong>on</strong>ate esti<br />

mate <strong>of</strong> particular tenets ;<br />

viz. that <strong>the</strong>y really suit, assist,<br />

and support particular mental, as str<strong>on</strong>g medicines do par<br />

ticular bodily, c<strong>on</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s. But whatever be <strong>the</strong> reas<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for this dispositi<strong>on</strong>, all sects and communi<strong>on</strong>s more or less<br />

exhibit it ; and men, and serious and earnest men, come<br />

forward and tell us, that <strong>the</strong>y could not c<strong>on</strong>duct <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

spiritual progress without <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e or o<strong>the</strong>r special<br />

tenet, which <strong>the</strong>y assert, and really imagine to be, <strong>the</strong><br />

spring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir energies, and <strong>the</strong> mainstay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hopes.<br />

And am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rest, <strong>the</strong> predestinarian comes forward and<br />

says this. He says that he could not, as a spiritual being,<br />

go <strong>on</strong> without this doctrine ; that he finds it essential to<br />

him ; that without it <strong>the</strong> universe would be a chaos, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Divine dispensati<strong>on</strong>s a delusi<strong>on</strong> ; that he reposes in it
