292 Scholastic <strong>Doctrine</strong> <strong>of</strong> Predestinati<strong>on</strong>. CHAP. x.<br />

around us, a nicely graduated scale <strong>of</strong> human character,<br />

divisi<strong>on</strong> gliding into divisi<strong>on</strong>, and shade deepening or<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tening into shade. Men are such combinati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> good<br />

and evil, that we hardly know where to place <strong>the</strong>m ; and a<br />

large porti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world seems to occupy a middle place,<br />

in oppositi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> tw<strong>of</strong>old destinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> mankind in<br />

Scripture to glory <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e hand, and misery <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The idea <strong>of</strong> a middle state has thus always recommended<br />

itself more or less as a c<strong>on</strong>jecture to human thought ; and<br />

a tendency to this doctrine, even where not formally ex<br />

pressed, is observable in all ages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church ; nor, so<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> facts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world around us remain <strong>the</strong> same,<br />

will it be o<strong>the</strong>rwise. In ano<strong>the</strong>r aspect <strong>the</strong> world presents<br />

itself to our minds in harm<strong>on</strong>y with <strong>the</strong> scriptural divisi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

as c<strong>on</strong>sisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> good few and <strong>the</strong> wicked and depraved<br />

mass ; vice, selfishness, and corrupti<strong>on</strong> appearing <strong>the</strong> gene<br />

ral rule, to which <strong>the</strong> disinterestedness or genuine goodness<br />

<strong>of</strong> a select number is <strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong>. The wickedness <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world is thus a recognised maxim in <strong>the</strong> world itself;<br />

and is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deepest sentiments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human mind,<br />

whose universal judgment <strong>on</strong>e wise man <strong>of</strong> even hea<strong>the</strong>n<br />

times expressed in <strong>the</strong> great proverb.<br />

In this state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case it is needless to add, that <strong>the</strong><br />

plain statements <strong>of</strong> Scripture <strong>on</strong> this subject are to be im<br />

plicitly received, as c<strong>on</strong>taining certain and important truth.<br />

One great divisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> mankind is seen <strong>the</strong>re, that <strong>of</strong> good<br />

and bad ; <strong>on</strong>e great distincti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> eternal lot, that <strong>of</strong><br />

heaven and hell. It remains that those who have received<br />

this revelati<strong>on</strong> should act accordingly, and, instead <strong>of</strong><br />

forming c<strong>on</strong>jectures about a middle state,<br />

live as for <strong>the</strong><br />

highest. Those who accept a revelati<strong>on</strong> generally are<br />

bound in c<strong>on</strong>sistency to accept its plain asserti<strong>on</strong>s in par<br />

ticulars ; nor does this obligati<strong>on</strong> cease because difficulties<br />

may follow. Those who accept a revelati<strong>on</strong> accept in doing<br />

so a limitati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> human reas<strong>on</strong>. There are<br />

great and important differences in <strong>the</strong> Christian world as to<br />

<strong>the</strong> point at which such limitati<strong>on</strong> comes in ; but whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al interpretati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Scripture, or a present infal<br />

lible <strong>on</strong>e, or <strong>the</strong> letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bible itself is <strong>the</strong> check, a
