Pelagian passed to that in <strong>the</strong> First Epistle to <strong>the</strong> Corin<br />

thians, As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be<br />

made alive<br />

(1 Cor. xv. 22.); and his interpretati<strong>on</strong> was<br />

<strong>the</strong> same, that whe<strong>the</strong>r death was understood here <strong>of</strong><br />

natural or <strong>of</strong> moral death, i.e., sin, Adam was <strong>on</strong>ly put<br />

forth as <strong>the</strong> sample, not as <strong>the</strong> root <strong>of</strong> it an ; interpreta<br />

ti<strong>on</strong> which he c<strong>on</strong>firmed by a reference to <strong>the</strong> succeeding<br />

text, As we have borne <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earthly we shall<br />

also bear <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavenly ; as if this explained<br />

<strong>the</strong> preceding <strong>on</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> an actual imitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

The curse, at <strong>the</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book <strong>of</strong> Gene<br />

sis, received a double explanati<strong>on</strong> ; first, as imposing no<br />

new suffering <strong>on</strong> man ; and, sec<strong>on</strong>dly, as imposing it, if it<br />

did impose it, <strong>on</strong>ly for <strong>the</strong> warning, and not for <strong>the</strong> punish<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> posterity. 2 The Pelagian observed that sorrows<br />

were multiplied <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> woman, as if <strong>the</strong>y had existed<br />

<strong>on</strong> whom <strong>the</strong> curse im<br />

posed labour, had laboured before in <strong>the</strong> Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden ;<br />

and that as a matter <strong>of</strong> fact labour was not <strong>the</strong> universal<br />

penalty, because it was not <strong>the</strong> universal lot <strong>of</strong> man. The<br />

sentence <strong>of</strong> death was even more boldly dealt with ; and<br />

when <strong>the</strong> Pelagian had inferred from <strong>the</strong> text, For dust thou<br />

art, and unto dust shalt thou return, that this event rested<br />

up<strong>on</strong> a physical ground anterior to man s transgressi<strong>on</strong>, he<br />

proceeded to observe that <strong>the</strong> announcement <strong>of</strong> it at that<br />

time was not intended as a severe, but as a c<strong>on</strong>solatory<br />
