undertak<strong>in</strong>gs, the <strong>in</strong>tention must be made clear that this ac-<br />

tion is undertaken <strong>in</strong> obedience to God, <strong>in</strong> response to His<br />

Command and out of love for Him.<br />

The Fast of any day of Ramadan becomes void by <strong>in</strong>ten-<br />

tional eat<strong>in</strong>g or dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g or smok<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>dulgence <strong>in</strong> any <strong>in</strong>-<br />

timate <strong>in</strong>tercourses, and by allow<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g to enter<br />

through the mouth <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>in</strong>terior parts of the body. And if<br />

this is done deliberately without any lawful reason, the pen-<br />

alty is to observe the Fast of sixty consecutive days or, as a<br />

second alternative, feed sixty poor persons sufficiently, be-<br />

sides observ<strong>in</strong>g the fast of one day aga<strong>in</strong>st the day whose<br />

Fast was made void. (K<br />

When the Fast of days other than those of Ramadan is<br />

broken for a lawful reason like those classified under the<br />

head<strong>in</strong>g "Exemption" above, the person <strong>in</strong>volved must make<br />

up for that Fast later, a day for a day.<br />

If anyone, by mistake, does someth<strong>in</strong>g that would ordi-<br />

narily break the Fast, his observance is not nullified, and his<br />

Fast stands valid, provided he stops do<strong>in</strong>g that th<strong>in</strong>g the mo-<br />

ment he realizes what he is do<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

On completion of the Fast of Ramadan, the special chari-<br />

ty known as Sadqatu-l~Fitr (Charity of Fast-break<strong>in</strong>g) must<br />

be distributed.<br />

(13) We may add here that: Other Schools of Fiqh ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the above<br />

mentioned compensation <strong>in</strong> the case of break<strong>in</strong>g the Fast through the<br />

<strong>in</strong>tentioned <strong>in</strong>dulgence <strong>in</strong> sexua] <strong>in</strong>tercourse, while observ<strong>in</strong>g the Fast of<br />

one day aga<strong>in</strong>st the day whose fast was made void through other cases<br />
