3. The second or third wife, if ever takeru enjoys the<br />

same rights and privileges as the first one. She is fully enti-<br />

t!ed to vvhatever i s due to the first one. Equality between the<br />

wives <strong>in</strong> treatment, provisions and k<strong>in</strong>dness is a prerequisite<br />

of polygamy and a condition that must be fulfilled by any-<br />

one who ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s more than one wife. This equality de-<br />

pends largely on the <strong>in</strong>ner conscience of the <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>-<br />

volved.<br />

4. This permission is an exception to the ord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

course. It is the last resort, the f<strong>in</strong>al attempt to solve some<br />

social and moral problems, and to deal with <strong>in</strong>evitable diffi-<br />

culties. In short, it is an emergency measure, and it should be<br />

conf<strong>in</strong>ed to that sense.<br />

The Quranic passage relevant to the subject reads as fol-<br />

"If you fear that you shall not be able to<br />

deal justly with the orphans (whom you<br />

marry or whose mothers you take as wives<br />

for you), marry women of your choiee.<br />

two or three, or four; but if you fear that<br />

you shall not be able to deal justly (with<br />

them), then only one, or (a captive) that<br />

your right hands possess. That will be<br />

more suitable to prevent you from do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>justice".<br />
