nomenon that some of the "conquered" people not only wel-<br />

comed the "<strong>in</strong>vad<strong>in</strong>g" Muslims but also fought on their side<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the oppressors? How would they conceive the pros-<br />

perity, freedom and progress of the "<strong>in</strong>vaded" regions under<br />

<strong>Islam</strong>, <strong>in</strong> comparison to what had prevailed there<strong>in</strong> before?<br />

We are not ascerta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g any particular po<strong>in</strong>t of view on<br />

the matter or mak<strong>in</strong>g any hasty conclusions. We simply be-<br />

lieve that the question is worth reconsider<strong>in</strong>g and deserves<br />

serious <strong>in</strong>vestigation. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs will certa<strong>in</strong>ly be <strong>in</strong>terest-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g and significant. Perhaps a Western m<strong>in</strong>d can understand<br />

better, if the whole matter is eonsidered <strong>in</strong> the light of the<br />

prevail<strong>in</strong>g conditions <strong>in</strong> today's world.<br />

The deep concern of the Western Allies over Berl<strong>in</strong>, the<br />

appeals of the oppressed everywhere, the anxiety of the<br />

South Koreans, the fears of the Laotians, the NATO busi-<br />

ness, the SEATO affairs, the <strong>in</strong>stability of the Communist<br />

Satellites- all that niay help the Western m<strong>in</strong>d to understand<br />

the events of those remote centuries and the actual policies<br />

of the Muslims of those days.<br />

4. The idea that Muslim wars <strong>in</strong> the outside world were<br />

motivated by economic needs of the Arabs is worth consid-<br />

er<strong>in</strong>g too. Although seem<strong>in</strong>gly certa<strong>in</strong> of their own assump-<br />

tions, the upholders of such an idea have not really studied<br />

the case seriously. Do they honestly th<strong>in</strong>k that the economic<br />

needs were the reasons to urge Muslims to cross their Arabi-
