Br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the severe boycott to an end was no <strong>in</strong>dication<br />

of peace or anticipation of tranquility on the part of the <strong>in</strong>-<br />

fidels. On the contrary, pressure and persecution cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

with a rapid <strong>in</strong>crease, but it was all <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong> as far as Muslims<br />

were concerned. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the <strong>in</strong>fidels convened a summit<br />

conference beh<strong>in</strong>d closed doors to discuss what to do next to<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>Islam</strong> and get rid of Muhammad once and for all.<br />

A unanimous resolution was adopted to select a strong man<br />

from every tribe and murder Muhammad <strong>in</strong> his bed. The<br />

mission of Muhammad was not dest<strong>in</strong>ed to end at that level.<br />

So, God <strong>in</strong>structed him to leave Mecca, his dear hometown,<br />

and migrate to Med<strong>in</strong>a to reunite with the native Muslims<br />

and the earlier emigrants who had fled from Mecca to Medi-<br />

na (see Qur'an, 8:30; 9:40). This was the Great Event of Hij-<br />

rah or Emigration with which the history of <strong>Islam</strong> began and<br />

by which the Muslim Calendar goes,<br />

Flee<strong>in</strong>g from Mecca, the Muslims were forced by a va-<br />

riety of circumstances to leave beh<strong>in</strong>d practically all their<br />

properties, belong<strong>in</strong>gs and even families. As soon as they<br />

settled <strong>in</strong> Med<strong>in</strong>a, Muhammad resumed his peaceful preach-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g and his gracious <strong>in</strong>vitation to <strong>Islam</strong>. Some natives re-<br />

sponded favorably to the Call of God and immediately be-<br />

came full-fledged members of the Muslim Community.<br />

Others did not embrace <strong>Islam</strong> but ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed their tradition-<br />

al beliefs. And because Muhammad was dedicated to digni-<br />

fied peace and reform, he concluded treaties with the non-
