Anthony Bennett jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Food <strong>and</strong> Agriculture Organization of the United<br />

Nations (<strong>FAO</strong>) <strong>in</strong> 1995. He has worked extensively <strong>in</strong> Asia <strong>and</strong> Africa <strong>in</strong> the<br />

design <strong>and</strong> implementation of dairy-<strong>in</strong>dustry programmes, ma<strong>in</strong>ly for <strong>FAO</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Major work areas<br />

that he has been <strong>in</strong>volved with <strong>in</strong>clude support<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>in</strong> dairy-<strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

strategy, enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>clusiveness of dairy-<strong>in</strong>dustry programmes <strong>and</strong> projects<br />

<strong>and</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> enhanced <strong>in</strong>vestments to optimise food security, <strong>in</strong>come<br />

generation <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able dairy-enterprise development. Mr Bennett has over<br />

16 years of <strong>in</strong>ternational professional experience <strong>and</strong> is the technical editor <strong>and</strong><br />

co-author of a number of publications on issues <strong>in</strong> the dairy <strong>in</strong>dustry, rang<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

milk safety to dairy <strong>in</strong>stitutions. He holds an M.Sc. Agriculture <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Technology from University College Dubl<strong>in</strong>, Irel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> an M.A. from Tr<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

College Dubl<strong>in</strong>, Irel<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Barbara Burl<strong>in</strong>game is a nutrition scientist <strong>and</strong> Deputy Director <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Nutrition</strong><br />

Division of <strong>FAO</strong>. She obta<strong>in</strong>ed her undergraduate degrees from the University of<br />

California, Davis, United States, <strong>in</strong> nutrition science <strong>and</strong> environmental toxicology,<br />

<strong>and</strong> her Ph.D. from Massey University <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. Her expertise <strong>in</strong>cludes food<br />

composition, human nutrient requirements <strong>and</strong> dietary assessment. Recently, her<br />

efforts have been directed toward elaborat<strong>in</strong>g the role of biodiversity for food <strong>and</strong><br />

nutrition <strong>and</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g models <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicators for susta<strong>in</strong>able diets.<br />

Brian Dugdill was raised on his family’s dairy farm <strong>in</strong> the north of Engl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce graduat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> dairy<strong>in</strong>g from the University of Read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1966 he has been<br />

a dairy practitioner, <strong>in</strong>itially with Glaxo International <strong>and</strong> the United K<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

supermarket group Asda. S<strong>in</strong>ce the mid-1970s he has worked <strong>in</strong> more than 30<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly develop<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Eritrea, Iraq, Mongolia, Myanmar <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. From 1976 to 1985 he led the United<br />

Nations (UN)/<strong>FAO</strong> <strong>Milk</strong> Vita programme that established modern dairy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Bangladesh after its war of <strong>in</strong>dependence. From 1986 to 1992 he led the multidonor<br />

UN team that supported the rebuild<strong>in</strong>g of the Ug<strong>and</strong>an dairy <strong>in</strong>dustry after<br />

its prolonged civil war. He was awarded <strong>FAO</strong>’s B.R. Sen Prize for 2006 (for<br />

outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g achievement/<strong>in</strong>novative dairy value cha<strong>in</strong> approach <strong>in</strong> rebuild<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Mongolian dairy <strong>in</strong>dustry) <strong>and</strong> the President of Mongolia’s Special Achievement<br />

Medal <strong>in</strong> 2007. He presently comb<strong>in</strong>es the role of Chief Adviser, East Africa <strong>Dairy</strong><br />

Development project, with food security/nutrition <strong>and</strong> livestock assignments for<br />

the UN <strong>and</strong> others around the globe.
