<strong>Milk</strong> <strong>and</strong> dairy products <strong>in</strong> human nutrition<br />

Scientifically sound evidence is fundamental to the approval <strong>and</strong> overall credibility<br />

of a claim.<br />

The nexus between diet <strong>and</strong> health is complicated. Consumers have become<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly aware of how dietary patterns can play a key role <strong>in</strong> the development<br />

<strong>and</strong> prevention of some chronic diseases (Lopez-Huertas, 2010) but struggle with<br />

conflict<strong>in</strong>g health messages from both the public <strong>and</strong> private sectors (Cash, Wang<br />

<strong>and</strong> Goddard, 2005; Wans<strong>in</strong>k <strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>and</strong>on, 2006). The dairy <strong>in</strong>dustry can play an<br />

<strong>in</strong>strumental role <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g lifelong healthy lifestyles by orientat<strong>in</strong>g research to<br />

produce nutrient-rich rather than energy-dense dairy foods <strong>and</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g the science<br />

that will fill the current knowledge gaps (Roupas, Williams <strong>and</strong> Margetts, 2009).<br />
