Although per capita consumption of dairy products has <strong>in</strong>creased rapidly <strong>in</strong><br />

East <strong>and</strong> Southeast Asia, especially Ch<strong>in</strong>a, s<strong>in</strong>ce 1987 the growth has started from<br />

a low base <strong>and</strong> consumption levels are still less than half the average for develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries as a whole <strong>and</strong> less than a quarter of that <strong>in</strong> LAC (Table 2.1). Growth <strong>in</strong><br />

dairy consumption has been limited if not stagnant over the last couple of decades <strong>in</strong><br />

both sub-Saharan Africa <strong>and</strong> the Near East <strong>and</strong> North Africa, although <strong>in</strong> the latter<br />

region consumption levels rema<strong>in</strong> relatively high.<br />

As a result of the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> per capita consumption of milk <strong>and</strong> other livestock<br />

products <strong>in</strong> parts of the develop<strong>in</strong>g world <strong>and</strong> population growth <strong>in</strong> those regions,<br />

people <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries are consum<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g share of dairy products
