In many ways these lists mirror the type of theme development in Step 2<br />

of the Reid Technique. Aubry leaves the impression, however, that despite his<br />

attempts to describe which approach or technique to use with which subject, an<br />

interrogator will only be able to choose the appropriate method after years of<br />

experience. In that sense, Aubry’s list of specific interrogation techniques is in<br />

the end more descriptive than prescriptive. Indeed, as Aubry notes, “the approach<br />

(should) be adapted to the type, character, and general background of the person<br />

being interrogated; the known facts, events and incidents of the crime which has<br />

been committed; and the type, kind, nature and extent of the physical evidence<br />

available.” 518 Because Aubry does not present an overarching schema for the<br />

interrogation like that of the Reid Technique, his presentation is more helpful in<br />

understanding the possible dynamics at play in an interrogation than in guiding<br />

the interrogator through the process.<br />

Kinesic <strong>Interrogation</strong><br />

Like the other techniques, Kinesic <strong>Interrogation</strong> recognizes that the interrogator<br />

“cannot depend on a singular, standardized approach to the interrogation that is<br />

applied to all deceptive subjects.” 519 The Kinesic <strong>Interrogation</strong> Phase is, like<br />

the Reid Technique, a continuation of the initial interview. First the interrogator<br />

makes the “interrogation attack,” confronting the suspect with the accusation and<br />
