The Lockout/Tagout Program ensures Marine Corps personnelare protected from injury during any servicing or maintenancedone on machinery or equipment, where the unexpectedenergization, start-up, or release of any type of energy (e.g.,electricity, steam, <strong>and</strong> hydraulic, pneumatic, gravity) couldoccur. The machinery or equipment will be rendered safe to workon by being locked or tagged out under requirements of 29 CFR1910.147, Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout); <strong>and</strong> 29CFR 1910.333, Selection <strong>and</strong> Use of Work Practices; <strong>and</strong> guidanceof ANSI Z244.1-2003, American National St<strong>and</strong>ard for Control ofHazardous Energy, Lockout/Tagout <strong>and</strong> Alternative Methods.2. An energy-isolating device is considered capable of beinglocked out in one of two ways. It is capable of being lockedout if designed with a hasp, other attachment, or integral partto which, or through which, a lock can be affixed. Also, it iscapable of being locked out if it has a locking mechanism builtinto it. Other energy isolating devices are also consideredcapable of being locked out if lockout can be achieved withoutneed to dismantle, rebuild, or replace the energy-isolatingdevice or permanently alter its energy control capability.3. The Lockout/Tagout Program does not apply to the following:a. Work on cord <strong>and</strong> plug connected electric equipment whereexposure to hazards of the unexpected energization or start-upof equipment is controlled by unplugging the plug, which isunder exclusive control of the person performing the servicingor maintenance.b. Hot tap operations involving transmission <strong>and</strong>distribution systems for substances such as gas, steam, water,or petroleum products when performed on pressurized pipelines,provided the following is demonstrated:12-3
