Adequate lighting is provided in <strong>and</strong> around the vicinityof the opening to a confined space, especially at night.Electrical lighting or other electrical equipment in use shallmeet requirements of Class I, Division 1 explosion-proofequipment if a flammable atmosphere may be present.14004. RESTRICTIONS FOR CLASS I AND II SPACES1. Class I Spaces. Entry into <strong>and</strong> work in or on Class I spacesshall be not permitted under normal operations <strong>and</strong> is authorizedonly under the following circumstances.a. Entry into Class I spaces is authorized only in cases ofrescue efforts, life threatening, or other extreme emergencies.In event of any such emergencies, personnel entering the spaceshall be equipped with:(1) A NIOSH or MSHA approved pressure-dem<strong>and</strong>self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or airline respiratorwith escape bottle for entry into Immediately Dangerous to Lifeor Health (IDLH) atmospheres.(2) A harness of a type suitable to permit extraction ofthe person from the space.(3) A lifeline securely attached to the harness.(4) Other necessary PPE suitable to the conditions <strong>and</strong>exposure.b. Emergency rescue personnel with appropriate equipmentshall be stationed immediately outside entry to a Class I space.Communications shall be established <strong>and</strong> maintained between theperson(s) entering the space <strong>and</strong> attendant personnel outside thespace. Where flammable or explosive vapors, gases, or materialsare present, only approved explosion-proof, spark-proof, orintrinsically safe equipment shall be used <strong>and</strong> all otherpotential ignition sources shall be prohibited.14-12
