Devices (e.g., sharps disposalcontainers, self sheathing needles) that isolate or remove thebloodborne pathogens hazard from the work center.20005. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)1. In the absence of effective engineering controls, personnelwill wear PPE when there is <strong>occupational</strong> exposure to blood orother potentially infectious materials. PPE must prevent blood<strong>and</strong> other potentially infectious materials from contact withworkers' clothes, skin, eyes, or mouth.2. PPE must be provided at no cost to employees <strong>and</strong> madeaccessible <strong>and</strong> available in appropriate sizes. PPE also must bekept clean <strong>and</strong> in good repair.3. Single use gloves must be replaced as soon as possible afterthey are contaminated, torn, or punctured, <strong>and</strong> will not bere-used under any circumstances.20006. HO<strong>US</strong>EKEEPING PRECAUTIONS1. Housekeeping personnel may be <strong>occupational</strong>ly exposed topotentially infectious material during the course of theirduties. Therefore, housekeeping personnel need to follow thewritten cleaning schedule that outlines proper decontamination<strong>and</strong> disposal of contaminated materials.2. Equipment <strong>and</strong> work areas must be cleaned <strong>and</strong> decontaminatedas soon as feasible after contact with any blood or potentiallyinfectious fluids.3. Protective coverings must be removed <strong>and</strong> replaced whenovertly contaminated, or at the end of each shift, if there is apossibility of contamination during the shift.4. Contaminated laundry should be h<strong>and</strong>led as little aspossible. Contaminated wet laundry must be placed in leak-proofbags that are colored red or marked with a biohazard label underrequirements of 29 CFR 1910.1030. Routine laundry practices20-6
