13007 MARCOR OSH PROGRAM MANUAL6. Prescription Safety Eyewear. The ISM shall consult with thesupply officer <strong>and</strong> cognizant medical treatment facility todetermine the most suitable procurement procedures whenprescription eyewear is required. When <strong>Navy</strong> medicine providesthese services, all medical forms <strong>and</strong> evaluations must bedocumented according to the Bureau of Medicine <strong>and</strong> Surgery,Manual of the Medical Department. When the Naval medicaltreatment facility cannot provide this service, a contractfunded by the ISM will be established with a local prescriptioneyewear provider. Prescription <strong>safety</strong> eyewear shall be providedto Marine Corps personnel engaged in eye-hazardous areas,processes, <strong>and</strong> occupations that require correction byprescription. The ISM or unit <strong>safety</strong> officer shall takeappropriate action to ensure the required corrective eyeprotection is provided. Goggles may be used as a temporarymeasure while waiting on delivery of prescription eyewear.7. Temporary Protective Eyewear. Where protective eyewear isrequired, <strong>safety</strong> glasses or goggles shall be provided tovisitors, instructors <strong>and</strong> others who must enter or pass througheye-hazardous areas.8. Maintenance of Eye Protection. Protective eyewear furnishedunder this program is government property <strong>and</strong> will be repairedor replaced if damaged in the course of employment.9. Contact Lens Restrictions. Marine Corps personnel SHALL NOTwear contact lenses when assigned to work involving the h<strong>and</strong>lingof caustics, acids, <strong>and</strong> toxic chemicals or dust. Such materialsare difficult to remove, without delay, when they get under thecontact lens.10. Emergency Eyewash Facilitiesa. Emergency eyewash facilities shall be provided in allareas where corrosive chemicals are used or stored. All suchemergency facilities shall be located where they are easilyaccessible to those in need, <strong>and</strong> shall be installed, maintained,flushed, <strong>and</strong> inspected per the manufacturers' recommendations<strong>and</strong> ANSI Z358.1, Emergency Eyewash <strong>and</strong> Shower Equipment.Plumbed eyewash stations shall be checked <strong>and</strong> flushed weekly.Portable eyewash stations shall be drained <strong>and</strong> flushed13-10
