14002 MARCOR OSH PROGRAM MANUALb. General nature of hazard inside (e.g., potentiallyhazardous atmosphere).c. Person to contact if entry is required.3. Comprehensive Hazard Evaluation. Many factors must beevaluated prior to entry into or work in a confined space. Suchan evaluation shall be in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.146. Theevaluations should include at least the following:a. Initial Atmospheric Testing. Upon completion of thistesting, each space is classified as on of the following:(1) Class I Space. Contains atmospheres or conditionswhich are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).(2) Class II Space. Contains atmospheres or conditionswhich are dangerous, but not IDLH.(3) Class III Space. Contains atmospheres or conditionswhich are contaminated.(4) Class IV Space. Contains no flammable or toxicagents, has an oxygen content consistent with outside ambientconditions (20-21 percent), <strong>and</strong> presents little potential forgeneration of hazardous conditions. An entry permit is notrequired for this class of space.b. Periodic <strong>and</strong> Continuous Atmospheric Testing. Manyoperations, due to the potential to generate hazardousconditions, require periodic or continuous monitoring as thework progresses to ensure safe conditions are maintained. Thetypes of testing vary <strong>and</strong> no single rule can be established forall operations. The CSPM shall establish the frequency <strong>and</strong> typeof test for periodic or continuous monitoring. The followingtypes of operations shall be carefully considered for periodicor continuous monitoring:(1) Hot work as defined in paragraph 14004, with thepotential of generating hazardous concentrations of toxicagents.14-6
