Per DoD 4160.21-M, Defense Materiel Disposition Manual,Chapter 10, Environmental Regulated and Hazardous Property, onlyapproved sealed impermeable bags (or other closed, impermeablecontainer) marked with the standard asbestos warning label shallbe used for the disposal of asbestos waste (e.g., wastegenerated from an asbestos rip-out operation, scrap materialfrom asbestos gaskets, asbestos contaminated PPE). Impermeablebags marked in this way shall not be used to carry clean PPE ortools, to dispose of general trash or to store asbestosmaterial.b. Asbestos waste shall be adequately wetted down, placedin a sealed impermeable bag, goose-necked, sealed, doublebagged, and sealed. Bags shall be sealed with duct tape.c. Asbestos waste bags shall be deposited in the speciallymarked white asbestos dumpsters located at the job site.15007. SPILLED OR UNCONTROLLED ASBESTOS1. Asbestos Spilla. An asbestos spill is the inadvertent or uncontrolledrelease of asbestos fibers into the atmosphere. For example,personnel removing a piece of equipment may damage and breakopen pipe insulation on the overhead causing pieces ofinsulation to fall to the ground and fibers being released intothe atmosphere.b. Any individual that causes or discovers a spill shall:(1) Secure work and move out of area to a distance of atleast 15 feet.(2) Warn others in the area of the spill, and secure thespace or have it guarded to prevent other personnel fromentering the area.15-13
